Syria continued its violent crackdown on protesters this week and increased its escalation using navy vessels to go after the port city of Latakia on Sunday. At least 25 people are reportedly killed, including three children.

Anthony Shadid, Beirut bureau chief for The New York Times, whose been covering this story, says it looks like the "gloves are off" for the Syrian government.

"The government's willing to deploy as much violence as it sees necessary to try to stop this uprising, Shadid said. "I don't think we've seen the full extent of what the government can deploy."
