Journalists in Syria tightly controlled, government crackdown rumors abound
The Syrian government has allowed a handful of journalists to take highly controlled tours of the country. Many still rely on rumors about the current government crackdown.
A violent crackdown in the city of Jisr al-Shughour has sent masses of refugees streaming into Turkey. Now, the Syrian government is allowing a select group of journalists to vivew the city on a tightly controlled tour. Bassem Mroue, Beirut Bureau Chief for the Associated Press -- whose colleague was among the selected journalists -- says that the streets of Jisr al-Shughour were mostly empty, and most of the shops mostly closed. He spoke with The Takeaway about what we know, and what we don't know, about what's happening in Syria.
