In addition to Gaddafi, the ICC issued warrants for his son Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, and brother-in-law Abdulla al-Senussi. They cite that Gadhafi ordered attacks on unarmed Libyan civilians. In response, Libyan officials rejected the court's authority on the grounds that it has ignored war crimes committed by NATO in Libya, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Meanwhile, rebels opposing Gadhafi are inching closer to Tripoli. The BBC's Mark Doyle, reporting from Libya where he has been following a group of Libyian rebel troops, says the rebels' attempt at overthrowing Gadhafi has brough them just 13 miles from the nation's capitol.
