The diverse musical traditions of Puerto Rico -- from bomba to plena, salsa to danza -- on 'Afropop Worldwide.'

Listen NowListen Now

In this program, "Afropop Worldwide" focuses on the diverse musical traditions of the island, ranging from bomba to plena, salsa to danza, with everything in between.

The early folk music of Puerto Rico is derived from multiple sources. The Taino, the indigenous people of Puerto Rico, were subjected to African and Spanish influences. The result is a musical stew of indigenous, African, Spanish and associated regions/styles.

Hosted by Georges Collinet from Cameroon and produced by Sean Barlow for World Music Productions, "Afropop Worldwide" draws on an unprecedented array of reporters, artists, and cultural guides. "Afropop Worldwide" is America's first and longest-lived weekly program on the music of Africa and the African Diaspora.
