Mo'Rockin Project blends oud and jazz
Yassir Chadley, an oud player, recently teamed up with acclaimed jazz trumpet player Kahlil Shaheed. They call themselves the Mo'Rockin Project.
They blend popular Moroccan tunes with contemporary jazz. They just released their second album -- Tajine.
This isn't the first time that North African music melded with jazz; it is a long tradition going back the the late 1950s on famed jazz bass player and oud player Ahmed Abdul-Malik's albums. Abdul-Malik blended the traditional with the contemporary jazz of his day -- Chadley is doing the same today with the smooth jazz of today.
