The Kremlin-backed Wagner group has been linked to a civilian massacre in Mali, where in March 2022, more than 500 people were killed in a military operation in a rural town in central Mali. The Malian government has denied that any civilians were harmed in what it called an anti-terrorist military operation against an Islamist extremist group. The World’s Marco Werman speaks with reporter Philip Obaji Jr. about Russian influence in the region and Mali’s use of Wagner mercenaries to address its problem with extremist groups.
