By the numbers: Seeking asylum in Greece

Between January 2011 and the past February there have been almost 50,000 people who have applied for asylum in Greece.

That's only the number of people who have applied for asylum status — tens of thousands more have arrived in Greece during the refugee and migrant crisis gripping Europe. Many of the Greece-bound migrants aimed to head farther west.
