An Israeli airstrike hit Rafah, in southern Gaza, on Aug. 08 after rocket attacks by Palestinians marked the end of a three-day ceasefire.
Since the fighting between Israel and Hamas began on July 8, the international community has been desperate for both sides to reach a lasting ceasefire agreement. The seven-week war has led to the deaths of over 2,100 Palestinians (most of them civilians), 64 Israeli soldiers, and six Israeli civilians.
On Aug. 26, both parties agreed to an open-ended ceasefire, which began at 7 p.m. local time and — so far at least — seems to be holding. This newest truce is the eighth ceasefire since the beginning of the conflict. Some of the ceasefires were relatively successful, while others collapsed within hours.
We used press reports to identify when ceasefires began, when/if fighting resumed, when/if they were extended, and when they officially ended. And we converted that information into an hour-by-hour account of how each ceasefire developed.
Dark blue represents hours of successful ceasefire. Red represents hours when violence disrupted or ended the ceasefire. And light blue represents hours when a ceasefire was extended beyond its original schedule. We've also added the approximate time when each ceasefire collapsed and steady fighting resumed.
