This Syrian bride wants the decapitated heads of 15 pro-Assad soldiers as her dowry

A bride in Syria has asked her fiance for a highly unusual dowry — the decapitated heads of 15 of President Bashar al-Assad's soldiers.

If that sounds insane (and it really, really does), consider this: the 50-year-old woman, Aicha Faaourya, lost her husband and four sons at the hands of regime forces during anti-Assad protests in Homs.

As it happens, her husband-to-be, 75-year-old Hajj Ahmad Ramilat, also lost his two sons to Assad's forces. So it’s hardly surprising that both bride and groom harbor intense feelings against the Syrian government.

In fact, Faaourya’s nickname is Umm Shouhada (“mother of martyrs”) and she’s “vowed to dedicate the rest of her life to the fighting the regime of President Assad,” reports Al Arabiya.

Ramilat popped the question this week at a sit-in protest at the Syrian embassy in Amman, Jordan and Faaourya agreed — on condition that he bring her human heads. Al Arabiya reports:

He accepted the heavy dowry challenge and pledged to have 15 pro-Assad troops beheaded for her love. In case of divorce he pledged to also provide the additional 50 decapitated heads of pro-Assad forces.

The only thing more insane than a decapitation-based marriage agreement? The profound human toll that Syria’s civil war has taken on its citizens.

Since anti-regime protests erupted in March 2011, over 160,000 people have been killed and over 2.5 million people have fled Syria, mostly women and children.

Another 6.5 million people are thought to be internally displaced, without access to medical care, food, water and shelter, reports the BBC.

Peace talks brokered by the international community between Assad’s Alawite-led government and the Sunni-dominated opposition forces have repeatedly broken down.
