Things rich people do: vacation in ‘shanty towns’ and pretend to be poor

They're gorgeous little shanty towns. The corrugated metal is just askew and the scrap wood may even give you splinters.

But don't worry! There's WiFi!

That's on official press materials for the spectacularly offensive "Shanty Town," a fake slum near Bloemfontein, South Africa, where rich tourists go to pretend they're poor.

Emoya Luxury Hotel and Spa, a five-star resort, has stooped to this new low, charging rich tourists around $82, or about half the average South African's monthly salary for a night's stay.

Visiting real slums has become a popular, if controversial, form of tourism.

But why risk it when Emoya has thought of everything. Battery-operated radio. Outdoor toilets. Even a big old drum to cook your dinner in — everything that is "normally part of this lifestyle" — and all "within the safe environment of a private game reserve."

According to the resort's official website:

Tripadvisor.com reviews were mixed.

One extolled the virtues of outdoor BBQ and finished with "It was unusual and fantastic and we would stay again."
