Paying tribute to a Mandela tribute playlist

The World

There was always a close tie between Nelson Mandela and music.

I want to share something from our friend Gilles Peterson at the BBC in London.

You can always count on Gilles for quality crate-digging. And he doesn't disappoint with a Mandela Tribute Mix, featuring songs, sounds and spoken words that honor former South African President Nelson Mandela.

Petersen's mix takes listeners from a Hugh Masekela song you don't hear a lot, What Is Wrong with Groovin, to the Harmonius Serenade Choir.

And from there, he goes to the the dark days of apartheid with the late Gil Scott-Heron's wonderfully upbeat shout-out to the people of South Africa — Johannesburg.
