On the first day of President Obama’s three-day trip to Israel, he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu showcased the bond between their two nations.

Some have called the day’s events a “lovefest.”

But front and center during the visit are the deepening troubles in the region, including new allegations about the use of chemical weapons in neighboring Syria.
