The first clue for today’s Geo Quiz — comes from the underbelly of a goat. We’re talking about Pashimina, the soft, warm cashmere-like wool.

Pashmina shawls and scarves are woven in a remote northern region of India. They’re made from the fleece of hardy Himalayan goats.

?It’s a special kind of goat it’s found in high altitude regions and it wears a special kind of fleece in winter which helps in braving cold, severe cold.?

Pashimina goatsPashimina goatsBut this winter has been especially hard on the goats. Deep drifts of snow are covering their pastures…and thousands of goats are beginning to starve. So we want you to name this region located in the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir.

It’s where the Karakorum Mountains rise up in the north and the Himalayas soar to the south. Once again, we’re looking for the home of some goats who may have provided the wool for your winter scarf. Wrap yourself up in those clues, we’ll be back with the answer in about 5 minutes.

There are lots of imitations, but real Pashmina scarves and shawls are made from the soft wool of goats raised in a remote region of India:

“Ladakh is the region, it in Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh is a cool desert region where this Pashmina goat is reared at a very high altitude, its found only in Ladakh.”

And Ladakh is the answer to our Geo Quiz.

As the BBC’s Altaf Hussein explains, an unusually severe Winter is threatening the goats that make all those shawls and scarfs possible.
