The Fall of Communism in Bulgaria

The World

Many in Bulgaria yearn for a bygone era.

In her new book, Kristen Ghodsee tells the stories of ordinary lives upended by Bulgaria’s move from communism to capitalism in the late 1980s and 90s.

The book is called “Lost in Transition.”

Ghodsee writes about a woman who was devastated as she watched a helicopter remove the large red star atop the former Communist Party headquarters.
