Anniversary of Original ‘Race to reach the South Pole’
For the Geo Quiz today, we are heading to the southernmost place on Earth.
We are looking for the name of the American research station at the South Pole.
The station is unusually busy right now because Wednesday marks the 100th anniversary of the original “race to reach the South Pole.”
Norwegian Roald Amundsen’s expedition became the first to reach it on December 14, 1911.
Among those now visiting the South Pole to commemorate the historic event is Norway’s prime minister.
The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is the answer to the Geo Quiz.
Anchor Marco Werman speaks with modern day polar explorer Hannah McKeand, who is now guiding a “Polar Vision” expedition that is currently at 85 degrees south or 250 miles from the South Pole.
