Amanda Knox appeal trial nears verdict
[waitingforcorrection: no audio attached, invalid GUID] This week, the Amanda Knox case may reach it’s final conclusion, when a court in Perugia, Italy arrives at a verdict on the appeal trial that began last November. Prosecutors and defense lawyers delivered their closing arguments last week, painting wildly different portraits of Knox, an American college student who was previously convicted for murdering her British roommate in 2007. The appeal trial has centered largely on re-examining the DNA evidence used to convict Knox originally. The case has drawn widespread international media attention. Journalist Nina Burleigh says we shouldn’t just dismiss the Amanda Knox case as tabloid fodder. Much of the case, she insists, is about cultural misunderstandings between the U.S. and Italy. Burleigh is a contributing editor at Salon.com and Elle Magazine and author of “The Fatal Gift of Beauty: The Trials of Amanda Knox.”
