Fire on New York City's Queensboro bridge contained

A truck fire on New York City's major Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge sent peals of smoke over the city but caused no injuries, taking a fire crew about two hours to get under control.

A 40-foot tractor trailer burst into flames on the bridge on Friday around 11:00 AM, emanating from the lower span of the double-decker bridge, CBS New York reported.

All three men riding inside the truck were able to escape the scene unscathed, and no one was harmed by the dramatic-looking flames.

Some drivers were less lucky: stuck behind the burning vehicle and beams for hours, one cab passenger reportedly walked out of the cab and back to Manhattan in an effort to catch a flight, CBS said.

It's still unknown when the bridge will reopen, the Associated Press said. Inspectors are currently giving the span the once-over to see if the flames caused any structural damage.

Traffic is backing up on the Manhattan side of the bridge, according to ABC7, meaning that New York commutors may be facing a frustrating day if the bridge does not reopen relatively quickly.

The 3,724 foot long Queensboro bridge has been in operation since 1909, and accommodates 10 lanes of traffic.
