K-9 officer “Kilo” shot and killed during standoff

A K-9 officer named "Kilo" was shot and killed at the start of a nine-hour police standoff with a man who fled from officers trying to serve him with a warrant.

The police dog was shot when officers in Sellersburg, Indiana, approached a man and he ran away, firing several shots, Trooper Brock McCooe told NBC.

The shots hit Kilo and a deputy, although the human officer was in stable condition at a nearby hospital after being hit in the leg.

About 100 SWAT officers and at least two armored vehicles responded to a call from the man's wife, who wanted help to convince him to go to a psychiatric hospital for treatment.

The officers serving the warrant reportedly encountered the man in a neighbor's backyard carrying two handguns in the presence of his children.

The suspect then fled to an empty house, barricading himself inside.

Sheriff Danny Rodden told WDRB that despite officers using "flash bangs," tear gas and 30-40 rounds in the standoff, the unnamed suspect was not hurt.

Eventually giving himself up, he was taken to the Clark County Jail.

But not before Kilo was sent into the house. The dog never left, officers said.

The house was heavily damaged during the standoff, they said.

Kilo had assisted with numerous drug busts.
