Turkey’s Struggles Over Power and Identity
Many doctors blame Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for creating a climate that condones violence against medical practitioners.
Many Turks who support Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan are thinking of turning against him, after almost 12 years in power.
These include journalist and author, Mustafa Akyol.
Akyol is himself conservative and religious, like Erdogan.
And he also approves of most of Erdogan’s policies, as do a majority of Turkish voters.
But Akyol says there’s one big problem.
“Those people who do not vote for Erdogan cannot get their voices heard,” Akyol says. “In any of his decisions. And his political style is becoming more and more intimidating.”
Akyol says he might not vote for Erdogan again.
“But I would have to see the option. Right now the opposition is now more liberal than Erdogan. Some of the opponents in the streets are ultra-nationalists.”
