Johnny Depp to go ‘Into the Woods’ with Meryl Streep

GlobalPost

LOS ANGELES — Johnny Depp is reportedly in talks with Disney to star in the upcoming film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical, 'Into the Woods'.

The Broadway production tells the story of a childless baker and his wife who attempt to lift a family curse cast on them by an evil witch so they can finally have a child.

They journey into the woods to confront the witch and encounter a cast of fairy tale characters including Rapunzel, Little Red Riding hood and the wolf, Jack and his beanstalk, and of course, a fearsome giant.

It is unclear which role Depp would take over in the film, with Variety reporting that he will play the Baker and the Hollywood Reporter claiming he will play "a hungry and sexy variation" of the wolf.

'Into the Woods' would be Depp's second Sondheim production after starring in the 2007 adaptation of 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street'.

Playbill.com previously confirmed that Academy Award winner Meryl Streep will join the cast as the witch, a role made famous on Broadway by Bernadette Peters.

Rob Marshall, director of Disney’s fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean”, will direct the film. James Lapine wrote the screenplay, based on his book for the original musical.

'Into the Woods' debuted on Broadway in 1987 and has won five Tony awards including 'Best Revival' in 2002 and 'Best Score' in 1988.

In case Depp does snag the role of the wolf, here's a sample of what he'll be singing.
