Dzhokhar Tsarnaev not armed when arrested, officials say

Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was not armed when he was arrested last week, despite reports of a gunbattle with police.
Authorities originally said they exchanged gunfire with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev for more than an hour before taking him into custody last Friday evening.

But several sources familiar with the investigation told CNN today no gun was found in the boat Tsarnaev was hiding in.
The Associated Press and Washington Post also reported the new information.
The FBI has declined to discuss was sparked the gunfire, but one law enforcement official told the Post that in the highly-charged "fog of war," an accidental gunshot may have sparked "contagious fire."

“They probably didn’t know whether he had a gun,” another law enforcement source told the Post. “Hours earlier, he and his brother had killed a police officer, shot another officer and thrown explosives out of their cars as the police were chasing them. They couldn’t assume that he did not have a gun and more explosives.”
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis had said shots were fired from inside the boat.
According to the AP, investigators did recover a 9 mm handgun believed to have been used by Tsarnaev's brother, Tamerlan, in a gunbattle with police last Thursday night before Tamerlan died.
Authorities believe Dzhokhar was shot at least once before he was able to escape.
