Lufthansa cancels most of its flights Monday due to strike

Lufthansa has canceled most of its flights in Germany and Europe scheduled for Monday due to one-day strike over a pay dispute.

The German airline said about only about 30 of its 1,700 flights would run as planned on Monday, the BBC said.

Passengers are expected to face massive travel disruptions on Monday following the failed wage negotiations between the airlines and its employees.

In a statement on its website, Lufthansa said passengers should expect the cancelations and delays to start affecting long-haul flights as early as Sunday.

The airline is offering refunds and rebooking passengers on other flights.

The strike comes after Lufthansa rejected a 5.2 percent wage increase over the next 12 months for union employees and refused to guarantee their jobs would not be cut.

The union called Lufthansa's final offer on Wednesday "scandalous," Reuters said.

Like many airlines, Lufthansa is cutting costs to better compete with cheaper carriers.
