Death penalty upheld in 1993 Mumbai bombing charges
Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has been sentenced to five years in prison in connection with the 1993 Mumbai bombings.
India has upheld the death sentence for Yakub Memon, allegedly one of the main plotters of the deadly 1993 Mumbai bombings, while slapping popular Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt with a five-year-long prison sentence for his role in the incident.
Yakub Memon is the brother of alleged mastermind Tiger Memon, who is currently an internationally wanted man. AFP wrote that Memon was the only one of 11 convicts in the case to see his death sentence upheld. The others successfully won their appeals.

Popular Bollywood film star Sanjay Dutt was hit with a surprise five-year-sentence for the illegal possession of arms, linked to the blasts that killed 257, wrote Voice of America.
Dutt has been given a month to surrender to authorities, wrote the Times of India, which noted that his jail term was reduced from the original six-year anti-terror TADA court sentence.
The Times added that Dutt, who has already serve 18 months in jail, will have to return to confinement to finish out his sentence — and he will be barred from participating in film for the three and a half remaining months.
