Was the cinnamon challenge actually good for you?

A spoonful of cinnamon a day is good for those with diabetes according to a new study.

Researchers at Ball State University found that those who consumed the spice with their breakfast cereal had reduced blood sugar levels.

The study involved about 30 patients, with some obese and others with a normal body mass index (BMI).

After serving them breakfast cereal topped with a substantial amount of cinnamon, blood sugar levels decreased on average about 25 percent said Counsel&Heal.

"Although the amount used in the study – 6 grams or about 2 1/2 teaspoons – was much more than a sprinkle, our subjects found the taste acceptable," said researchers, accoroding to MedXPress.

"Cinnamon can be added to a wide variety of foods. Some ideas include yogurt, iced coffees and teas, fruit smoothies and muffins."

The researchers said that they plan further studies after the initial encouraging result.

"Nearly 80 million American adults have prediabetes, a condition characterized by high blood glucose that often leads to diabetes," said researchers, reported Counsel&Heal.

The study was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
