Anne Hathaway parody: 6 questions for Emma Fitzpatrick (VIDEO)

You may have seen Anne Hathaway belting out "I Dreamed a Dream" as Les Miserables' Fantine, a French prostitute with a tragic fate. 

But have you seen the parody, "For Your Consideration"?

Made by director Alberto Belli, the spoof of Hathaway — played by 27-year-old actress and singer Emma Fitzpatrick — begging the Academy for an Oscar has gone viral. As of Friday evening, it had over 114,000 views on YouTube. 

Some of the sample lyrics of the rewrite of "I Dreamed a Dream" include: 

"I played a prostitute who died/her life was really sad and awful"

"I was bold and unafraid; I let them give me this new haircut"

"And I lost half my bodyweight/but then they never did a wideshot."

"And though I had to blow my nose/I did it all in one take, bitches."

We caught up with Fitzpatrick about playing Anne…with an E. 

How did you land this role of a lifetime?

It was a friend of a friend situation. The director found a writer (Robert Hill) to rework the lyrics with him, and a mutual friend of ours knew I had short hair and could sing. Luck of the draw. 

What was filming like and how did you prep for the shoot? 

We just kind of went for it. I ran through it the night before with the writer and director and thought about what I wanted to do. We shot it eight times beginning to end [at the director’s apartment in Marina del Ray] and the eighth take was the one we all liked.

I definitely watched the scene a bunch of times the night before and even made notes; “this is where she takes a deep dramatic gasp, this is where she looks down with a forlorn look.” I wanted to call directly upon her performance. I’ve never done a bunch of parody, but from what I understand, the more you go over the top with the details and the specifics, the funnier it is.

The song has a ton of great zingers. Which line is your favorite and why? 

My favorite was “I did it all in one take, bitches”…and I think you can clearly see in the performance that it’s my favorite. Everything builds really beautifully to that moment. That line came flowing out of my mouth very naturally. 

What has been the best reaction you’ve gotten to the video?

This whole thing is insane to me. Every couple hours I check to see the numbers and its like Christmas every time I look. Anything where a lot of people are watching gets both positive and negative reaction, but people have been really willing to share it, even among family and friends. I’m a performer, I post things all the time – but this one, 80 people tweeted it and shared it immediately. I’m also getting to showcase something that I do really well, so it’s a double-whammy for me in that respect. 

Do you think Anne has the Oscar in the bag?

I’m rooting for her. I haven’t been totally up on the whole awards season thing, but she did an awesome job. I think it would be super cool if a triple threat won an Oscar. 

Here’s a tough one: Do you hate Anne Hathaway as much as the rest of the Internet does? 

I thought that her performance in [Les Miserables] was awesome. I’m super emotionally connected to that show and music, since I’ve been a fan since I was a kid. I wept throughout most of the movie. I think the [Anne Hathaway hatred] is a social commentary thing that a lot people are talking about, and she’s getting a lot of flack which is influencing way that she’s being perceived. She’s done some hilarious parodies herself – like most recently, Claire Danes from Homeland.

I think as someone in the public eye, you have to be able to take a joke and laugh at yourself. There was no malicious intent. When you’re really good and you’re in public, that’s going to happen.
