It's been a quarter of century since the last major immigration overhaul took place in the United States.
That was when President Reagan signed into law the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
The legislation made it illegal to hire an undocumented immigrant.
It also granted amnesty to some three million illegal immigrants already in the country.
One of those who benefited was Rosaura Piñera.
She was the great-grandmother of journalist Monica Ortiz Uribe, of Fronteras, The Changing America desk.
