Picasso vandal turns himself in

Uriel Landeros, a Houston man accused of vandalizing a Picasso painting at the Menil museum last year, has turned himself in, The Houston Chronicle reported. Landeros surrendered to the police near the US-Mexico border in McAllen. "He surrendered at the urging of his family and myself, to come in and get started on the process," his attorney Emily Detoto told the Chronicle.

Landeros, 22, admitted to spray-painting a stencil of a bullfight and the word “conquista” – a reference to Spanish colonialists – on the work, the AFP reported.

The incident made headlines in June after someone filmed it and posted the footage to YouTube. In November, Landeros told a local TV station that his vandalism was an act of social and political defiance, BBC news reported. 

In October a small Houston gallery held a controversial exhibit featuring dozens of Landeros' own paintings, the AFP said.
