BOSTON, MA — The award-winning world news site GlobalPost is opening a sales office in New York City and has appointed media-industry veteran John J. McMenamin as Chief Revenue Officer. It will be the first time GlobalPost has had a sales office in New York since it launched in 2009. McMenamin, a sales and marketing leader who has held high-level posts at Dow Jones & Company, NBC Internet, and Turner Broadcasting, among other media properties, will oversee all sales operations for GlobalPost from Manhattan.

“After conducting an extensive national search during the past several months, John stood out for the breadth and depth of his experience, his deep knowledge of digital, his work in both major traditional media and in startups, and his strategic vision,” said GlobalPost President and CEO Philip S. Balboni. “We believe that this is the right time in our growth cycle to move our sales headquarters to the dominant media buying center so we can continue to attract the world’s leading brands as advertisers and maintain our upward revenue trajectory.”

Joining McMenamin in the New York office will be newly appointed National Account Director Orin Shands, who was previously a senior planner in the New York office of MEC, one of the world’s leading media agencies. Vice President of Sales James Bandera will remain at GlobalPost’s Boston headquarters.

For the past two years, McMenamin has worked at Cablevision Systems, a leading telecommunications company headquartered on Long Island, NY, as a digital media consultant charged with developing new multi-platform television news networks. He spent five years at Dow Jones, where as Senior Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing, he was responsible for growing ad revenue across 12 print and online properties including the Wall Street Journal’s US, European and Asian publications, WSJ.com, MarketWatch.com, and Barrons.com. He served as Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer at NBC Internet/NBCi.com, and Senior Vice President, Chief Revenue Officer at iVillage.com. In addition, John spent 10 years at Turner Broadcasting as President of Turner Private Networks where he was involved in the development and launch of the CNN Airport Network, the CNN Better Health Network, and the CNN College Television Network among others. Prior to joining Turner, he held sales management positions at ActMedia, a leading in-store advertising company and at Newsweek International. He has served as CEO of Ripple TV, a Silicon Valley start-up and leading digital television company. While at Ripple TV he expanded network distribution, tripled ad revenue and executed the strategic sale of the company to TargetCast Media Networks.
