A man shot and killed a woman, then killed himself Friday at the Las Vegas Strip's Excalibur hotel-casino.

According to the Associated Press, the shooting happened at around 8:30 p.m. near the castle-shaped hotel's front entrance. Las Vegas Metro Police Lt. Ray Steiber said the man shot the woman, who was a vendor at the Excalibur's concierge desk, before turning the gun on himself.

The man died at the scene and the woman was pronounced dead later at a local hospital.

Calls from Reuters to the Las Vegas police and the Excalibur were not immediately returned, but the hotel tweeted: "An isolated incident has occurred at Excalibur this evening, local authorities have the matter under control."

"Someone started shooting inside Excalibur & I'm stuck in our dressing room waiting to see if it's safe to come out," Uraina Serna, an area model, also tweeted.

The gunman and the victim were not yet identified and their relationship was not immediately clear, reported Al Jazeera. Steiber said patrons fled at the sound of the gunfire, but no one else was wounded.

The shooting happened while the front desk was busy with the National Finals Rodeo and other events in town.

It also came the same day a gunman shot dead 20 school children at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Ct.
