Philippines picks up pieces after freak typhoon roars across country

The World

Government agencies and rescue teams in the Philippines are picking up the pieces after Typhoon Bopha roared ashore on the southern island of Mindanao as the strongest storm ever to hit that area.

A category five super typhoon, with winds of 160 mph, left hundreds dead and thousands homeless.

Over the weekend, the storm weakened over the South China Sea, but not before turning back toward the Philippines and threatening one of the country's northern islands.
