Brain on the outside: a rare condition makes scalp look like a brain

A medical condition sees a man's scalp look like his brain is on the outside of his head.
A 21-year-old Brazilian man went to his doctor complaining about changes in the look of his scalp, which was becoming creased and furrowed.
Cutis verticis gyrate was the diagnosis – an overgrowth of skin on the head.
The morphologic condition is more common to men than women.
It is mostly cosmetic but has been found to be associated with diseases like schizophrenia.

“It can be associated with some rare genetic conditions, but most commonly occurs by itself,” Josh Zeichner, assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City told ABC News.
Doctors who treated him in Brazil said he was rather nonchalant about the condition.
"The patient did not have the habit of covering his head… The condition did not bother him cosmetically," Dr. Karen Schons a dermatologist at the Hospital Universitario de Santa Maria, said Medical Daily.
The finding was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
