Bomb hits near Syrian security unit in Damascus: report

A Syrian official told the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity that a car bomb exploded near the government's intelligence unit just outside Damascus today.

The explosion rocked the Damascus suburb of Harasta and could be heard throughout the capital, said AP, citing a report by the pro-state TV station Al-Ikhbariya. There were no immediately reported casualties nor claim of responsibility.
Skirmishes between regime forces and armed rebels reportedly broke out right afterwards, according to AP's report from Al-Ikhbariya.
The two sides have been locked in an 18-month conflict that has cost some 30,000 lives.
Embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has refused to step down. The international community, meanwhile, has been unable to find a peaceable solution to the conflict.
Syrian rebels claimed a September 26 bomb attack on Assad's army headquarters in Damascus, a strike that left at least four soldiers dead, according to Reuters.
