Giant explosion caught on camera in Jupiter.
An amateur astronomer has recorded a spectacular explosion on Jupiter's surface.
So far experts believe that the explosion was an asteroid or comet that slammed into the giant planet, said National Geographic.
That would make it the fourth impact in the last three years – meaning that capturing it on camera was quite a feat.
The photo was recorded by amateur astronomer Dan Peterson of Racine, Wisc. with a Meade 12-inch LX200GPS telescope, said Space.
The online Slooh telescope looked for the scars caused by the blast afterwards.
Yet, it remains unclear whether the impact did any damage.
The most famous known impact of a comet on Jupiter was the P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 in 1994 that littered the planet with debris.
