Samsung violated Apple patents, US jury finds

Apple has scored a major victory over Samsung Electronics in their global patents war.

A US federal court jury this afternoon found Samsung had infringed some of Apple’s patents relating to the touch-screen features and design of its iPhone and iPad products, the Wall Street Journal reported.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the jury awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages. Apple had sought $2.5 billion.

The nine-person jury took about 22 hours to reach its verdict after sorting through more than three weeks of evidence.

The jury found Samsung had infringed six of seven patents for mobile devices that Apple had presented in the high-stakes legal case, Bloomberg reported.

Samsung and Apple have been waging a global war over patents as they fight for supremacy in the fast-growing smartphone and tablet computer markets.

Earlier today, a South Korean court ruled the high-tech giants had infringed on each other’s patents and awarded damages to both companies, Agence France-Presse reported.

It also banned the sales of certain products in South Korea, including Apple’s iPhone 4 and iPad 2, as well as Samsung’s Galaxy S and Galaxy SII.

The ban does not apply to the latest models of these gadgets.

The BBC reported earlier this month that Apple had been granted a temporary injection preventing the sale of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 in most of the European Union.
