Lesbian who claimed masked men carved anti-gay slurs into her body made it all up
Investigators said they found no apparent sign of a struggle in the living room where Charlie Rogers, 33, said she was attacked by masked men.
A lesbian who claimed she was tied up and violently attacked in a gay hate crime will be charged after it was discovered she made the story up.
The Miami Herald reported Charlie Rogers faked the attack because she felt it would spark change.
Lincoln Police Chief Jim Peschong said that four days before Rogers staged the July 22 attack, she outlined her motive in Facebook postings.
"So maybe I'm too idealistic but I believe way deep inside me that we can make things better for everyone. I will be a catalyst. I will do what it takes. I will. Watch me, " she wrote.
The 33-year-old told police three masked men broke into her home, tied her up, carved anti-gay slurs into her body and tried to set her house on fire.
Rogers's gave police elaborate details, saying one man pinned her down while another sliced a cross into her chest, cut the front of her thighs and shins and carved derogatory words in her arms and abdomen.
NBC reported Rogers also alleged the men spray painted slurs inside the home and poured gasoline around the house before lighting it on fire.
She was bound and naked when she escaped and managed to knock on a neighbor’s door at about 4 a.m.
CBS News said the alleged attack sparked rallies from Lincoln's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, who staged protests outside the state Capitol in Lincoln.
Investigators became suspicious when they found no apparent sign of a struggle in the living room where Rogers said she was attacked, and an FBI forensic pathologist concluded that Rogers either cut herself, or allowed someone else to do it.
An arrest warrant was issued for Rogers today.
