Ryan Lochte’s mom says one-night stand comment misquoted

Single ladies hoping to win the heart of US Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte be warned: he doesn’t have time to commit for more than one night.

“He goes out on one-night stands,” Ike Lochte, the swimmer’s well-informed mom, helpfully told TODAY.com on Thursday.

“He’s not able to give fully to a relationship because he’s always on the go.”

Naturally, the comments caught fire and news outlets around the world relayed the quote.

It forced Ike to backpedal.

She said a day later that her comments were taken out of context.

"All I wanted to say is that he's so sensitive about not wanting to hurt a girl dating, so he just goes and dates and takes out a girl for maybe one or two dates and doesn't have a relationship because he doesn't have [time] and it's not fair to the women," Ike told USA Today.

Ike said she realized it made no sense for a woman who also has two daughters to start talking about her son's casual sex life.

That's why she's blaming a hair-trigger media.

"They turned it around. I'm not used to this," Ike said, according to USA Today. "What kind of mom is going to say that? Especially being a mom and having two daughters."

Lochte also came to his mother's defense, saying that while she should have known better, she was still taken advantage of.

"They took it out of context. My mom is really new to all of this and the media," he said, according to Us Magazine. "She meant since the last four years I just wanted to focus on swimming, and I didn't really have time for a relationship." 

Lochte, who is going home with five medals – including two gold – from the London Olympics, turned 28 on Aug. 3.

Now that his swimming commitments are finished, Lochte plans to celebrate the big day with his family, the Associated Press reported.

"I think it's the first time in years where I get to celebrate it and I don't have to swim," Lochte was quoted as saying.

"So I'm definitely happy for that. We'll probably just walk around and just be a family.”

But Lochte’s comments to ESPN The Magazine last month suggest that isn’t the only thing the swimming champion hopes he will be doing.

"My last Olympics, I had a girlfriend – big mistake," Lochte was quoted as saying. "Now I'm single, so London should be really good. I'm excited."

He won't be the only one trying to hook up. Lochte estimates that "70 percent to 75 percent of Olympians" are getting down and dirty during the games. 

"Hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do," he told ESPN.

Ladies, you've been warned.
