Ruta Meilutyte wins Lithuania’s first Olympic medal in swimming

At just 15, Ruta Meilutyte pullled off a stunning upset to win Lithuania's first ever Olympic medal in swimming Monday.

"I can't believe it. It's all too much for me," BBC Sports quoted Meilutyte as saying after beating an experienced field in the 100-meter breaststroke final.

She overcame several challenges to win gold.

The first happened when the starter's gun went off before he had called "on your marks," unnerving many of the racers during a time when pre-race nerves are running highest. American Breeja Larson even dived into the pool, but was allowed to race because of the gun malfunction, Reuters reported.

The eight finalists had to step back to their chairs and sit while the problem was fixed.

Late in the race, Meilutyte survived a fierce challenge from American Rebecca Soni, the reigning world champion, and finished first in 1 minute, 5.47 seconds, The Associated Press reported.

Soni ended up second in 1:05.55 while Japan's Satomi Suzuki finished third in 1:06.46.

Defending champion Leisel Jones of Australia was fifth, according to the AP.
