Pakistan: Suicide bomber attacks militant compound
At least nine people were dead and 16 other wounded after a suicide bomber attacked a compound in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday.
KARACHI, Pakistan — At least nine people were dead and 16 other wounded after a suicide bomber attacked a compound in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday.
According to the Times of India, the suicide bomber blew up an explosive-laden car in Paksitan's northwest Kurram tribal district right outside the compound of an anti-Taliban militant commander, Maulana Nabi.
Nabi remained unharmed, BBC News reported. Three children were among the dead.
The Associated Press reported that Nabi was once a close ally of a prominent Pakistan Taliban commander, Mullah Toofan, but the two are now heated rivals.
The AP also reported that while no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, suspicion is likely to fall on Toofan who is a close ally to Hakimullah Mehsud, the head of the Pakistani Taliban.
According to the BBC, Nabi's compound is used by the local militia.
According to an AFP tally, attacks blamed on Islamists have killed more than 5,100 people in Pakistan since government troops raided an extremist mosque in the capital Islamabad five years ago.
