US ambassador to Kenya Scott Gration resigns

GlobalPost

US ambassador to Kenya Scott Gration has resigned over “differences in leadership style and priorities” with Washington, just one year after he took up the post in Nairobi.

Gration, a former two-star Air Force general and US special envoy to Sudan, was appointed in May 2011, the Agence France Presse reported.

According to the Associated Press, he had called being ambassador “a dream job.” His resignation will take effect on July 28. No further details were provided regarding the reasons behind his departure.

According to the BBC, Kenya is widely viewed as key base of operations for US efforts to tackle Islamist groups across the Horn of Africa, including in neighboring Somalia where Al Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab rebels are fighting western- and African Union-backed government forces.
