Brazil: 3-year-old falls from hospital’s 5th floor

SÃO PAULO, Brazil — A three-year-old boy fell from a fifth-story window at Hospital São Lucas in Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana neighborhood on Wednesday night.

The boy was transferred to Hospital de Assistência Médico Cirúrgica Infantil (Samci) in the north of the city because São Lucas does not have a pediatric unit, reported Folha de São Paulo. Doctors confirmed that the child is in an induced coma and is breathing with the help of machines.

The son of an employee at Hospital São Lucas, the boy was playing in the hospital cafeteria when he jumped over a small cement wall and fell from the fifth floor, landing on an air conditioning unit from the third floor, according to Globo's G1. Samci said the boy suffered multiple fractures to the skull and spinal cord.

Band also reported that the child was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit yesterday, and Samci officials said he was in critical, but stable, condition.

According to Folha, Hospital São Lucas released a statement saying: "The child was immediately rescued by the medical team, which conducted the boy's first diagnostic tests. The institution then transferred the child to a pediatric unit, since it does not have one of its own."
