Police arrest five over 9.5-ton garlic heist

It's hard to hide the smell of fresh garlic, no matter how fast you're driving — especially if you've stuffed 9.5 tons of the stuff into three "sagging" vans, reported The Associated Press.
The vehicles were trying to hightail their way out of Austria and into Hungary in a believed smuggling attempt, Austrian police told The Austria Press Agency today, saying they had arrested five Romanians in connection with the incident.

“For that amount of garlic, the men would have needed nine small lorries, not three,” Agence-France press cited a police officer as saying.
The massive garlic haul is worth an estimated 30,000 Euros ($37,500), officials said, and was believed to have originated in Spain, destination Hungary, said AFP.
Police noticed the smell late Tuesday.
"All three vehicles really stunk like garlic," one officer told The Austria Press.
The five men, whose names were not released, have been held for questioning and the garlic confiscated, according to AFP.
