Vatican hires Fox News journalist for media relations post

The Vatican has hired a journalist from Fox News to help improve its media relations, a senior Church source said on Saturday, according to Reuters.

Greg Burke, a member of the conservative Catholic group Opus Dei, according to Reuters, will become a "senior communications adviser" to the Vatican's Secretariat of State.

Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi confirmed the move to the Associated Press. Lombardi said Burke will help integrate communications matters within the Secretariat of State and handle its relations with the Holy See press office and other communications offices within the Vatican.

The news comes as the Vatican is dealing with the largest scandal in decades, over leaked documents.

Last week, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, second only to the Pope, accused the media of trying to imitate Dan Brown. He said, "[Journalists] continue to invent fairytales and repeat legends," according to The Telegraph.

Bertone said, "The truth is that there is an attempt to sow division that comes from the Devil," in reference to the media's focus on the leak of sensitive documents to Pope Benedict XVI, according to The Telegraph.

The Pope has also convened a special meeting of Cardinals on Saturday to discuss how to deal with the leaked documents scandal which revealed corruption, intrigue and power struggles within the church, said the AP.
