Angolan Musicians In Portugal Mix Styles

A few years ago, young musicians with Angolan roots and living in Portugal hit upon a new fresh sound. The band, Buraka Som Sistema, took the Angolan dance style known as kuduro and injected it with techno beats. Kuduro literally means "hard ass" and the dance itself is upbeat and energetic, making derrieres shake from Luanda to Lisbon. But now a new version of kuduro has emerged, and this time the samples come from the old-school soulful and sometimes psychedelic sounds of 1970s Angolan pop music.
