Syria: roadside bomb strikes United Nations convoy (VIDEO)

A United Nations observer convoy in Syria was struck by a "roadside bomb" on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

The news wire wrote that the attack came shortly "after regime forces opened fired on a funeral procession nearby and caused multiple casualties" in Khan Sheikhoun, a town in Idlib province.

A video of the event that was posted to YouTube shows cars clearly marked "UN" stopped in a street, which is strewn with shoes. An explosion is heard, and smoke and dust rises beside one of the vehicles. (See video below)

The shoes were reportedly left in the street after funeral attendees fled regime gunfire, which the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights called "a real massacre [that] took place in the presence of UN observers."

A witness told the AP that after a UN car "took a direct hit," the observers wouldn't respond to the surge of passersby around the car and "wouldn't even open their windows."

CNN wrote that Ahmad Fawzi, spokesman for UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, said 3 vehicles were damaged but no observers were injured.

United Nations observers in Syria have come under fire before. Just last week, a roadside bomb in the country's south missed a UN convoy by seconds.

The observers do not publicly release their observations, sending them instead through the UN, which has delivered some findings at press conferences in New York. The AP wrote that if the attack is confirmed it "could put pressure on [UN observers] to describe publicly what they are seeing in Syria."
