Quebec bus crash kills 2, injures at least 20

Two passengers are dead after a tour bus with 57 people on board skidded off the road and flipped in Quebec on Saturday, reported CBC. A 67-year-old man from Stratford, Quebec, and a 70-year-old woman from Thetford Mines, Quebec, died from their injuries.

More than 20 people were injured and rushed to hospitals in Victoriaville, Thetford Mines and Quebec City, according to the National Post. The accident happened about 180 km northeast of Montreal near Plessisville, Quebec, on Highway 165.

The bus was packed with seniors on their way to a casino on the New York state side of the Akwesasne native reserve when, around 8 a.m., it missed a sharp turn, hit a hydro poll and flipped over onto its right side, reported The Montreal Gazette. Weather conditions could have been a factor in what happened to the bus. There were high winds and slippery roads due to a mix of rain and snow at the time of the accident.

Autocars La Chaudière bus company, which owns the bus in question, wrote an e-mail to the Toronto Sun saying that the driver was a retired veteran with a clean driving record. It also said the bus was in “perfect mechanical condition.”

"All my sympathy is with the families who were affected by this unfortunate accident," said Pierre Breton, the bus company's president, to CBC. He also added that it was the first fatal accident in the company's 20 years in business.
