Frankfurt Airport workers to strike again, starting Feb. 26

Ground staff at Frankfurt Airport will walk off the job for the second time in ten days, as pay talks between their union, GdF, and airport operator Fraport AG broke down on Friday night, the Associated Press reported.

The strike is slated to begin at 9 p.m. Sunday (2000 GMT; 3 p.m. EST), and end at 5 a.m. Thursday (0400 GMT; 11 p.m. EST Wednesday), according to the AP.

Union officials had called off their first strike, which ran from Feb. 16 to Feb. 22 with a break during the weekend, when Fraport invited the union to talk, Reuters reported.

GdF is asking for double-digit wage increases for about 200 workers to bring salaries into line with what other airports pay, Reuters reported.

According to Reuters:

Frankfurt airport is Europe's third-busiest after London-Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle, with about 1,300 flight movements per day, more than half of them by Lufthansa.

In a statement today, Fraport assured travelers it could handle “extended strike periods” by ground staff, according to Bloomberg News. The airport operator said more than 80 percent of flights went ahead when GdF ground staff members staged all-day work stoppages during the last strike and intercontinental flights weren’t affected.

"As the strike begins late, we expect minimal impact for Sunday, with virtually no cancellations,” a Lufthansa spokesman told Reuters today. “For Monday we expect there will be some cancellations if a strike does go ahead.” He said a list of Monday's flight cancellations would be available on its website starting on Sunday afternoon, Reuters reported.
