Combat photojournalism exhibit opens in NYC

GlobalPost

Some of the best eyes in the world for 'ground truth' gathered in New York last week for a group photo exhibit titled Conflict Zone, which featured GlobalPost’s own Ben Brody.

“The opening was absolutely packed — New York's photojournalism community really came out in force,” said Brody, whose work from Afghanistan for GlobalPost was featured in the exhibit.

The group show, Conflict Zone, is a project of the Independence Fund, Inc., an all-volunteer non-profit dedicated to serving the severely injured and their families after they return with serious physical or emotional wounds suffered while working in conflict environments.

“It's a huge honor for me to have a few of my prints shown alongside work by such tremendous talents as Andrea Bruce, Joao Silva, Greg Marinovich and others,” said Brody, who is himself a veteran who served in Iraq before pursuing the path to become a photojournalist.

And the exhibit is for a few very good causes.

Half of any funds raised will be dedicated to the Chris Hondros Fund which was created in the name of the photographer who was killed last year while on assignment in Libya working alongside Tim Hetherington, who was also killed. Twenty-five percent will be donated to the Fisher House for veterans and the remainder will support the Independence Fund's mission to provide the tools, therapies and guidance to those veterans severely injured in Iraq and Afghanistan that they otherwise are not receiving.

The show is currently at the New York City Fire Museum on 278 Spring Street in SoHo, and will run through Feb. 17.
