Stephen Colbert mulling run for president – VIDEO

WASHINGTON — Stephen Colbert, the comedian who made his name as a fake conservative TV personality, is mulling an entrance into the 2012 presidential nomination contest, according to POLITICO.

On Wednesday a poll showed him one point ahead of New Hampshire third place finisher, Jon Huntsman. Colbert had 5 percent of the vote in his home state, and Huntsman had four, Reuters reported. Colbert said, "These guys have been running for a year now. How can I ever compete with an established candidate like Jon Huntsman?”

After discussing GOP dissatisfaction with frontrunner Mitt Romney, Colbert promised fans a special announcement tonight, and speculation is rife that he will announce a bid for president of the United States.

“My heart always leads me to me!” Colbert said. His plan for after last night's show? "Go home, sit down and talk it over with my money."

Colbert has made several forays into real-life politics before. Appearing before a Congressional hearing on illegal farmworkers in September 2010, Colbert said that the solution was for Americans to eat less fruits and vegetables, according to the Times. "[I]f you look at the recent obesity statistics you’ll see that many Americans have already started," he quipped. He also attempted to get on the ballot for the 2008 South Carolina Democratic primary.

His show airs on Comedy Central tonight at 11:30 PM EST.
