Racist receipt gives New York customer indigestion

Harlem resident Minhee Cho, 24, only ordered a small pizza at a Papa John’s restaurant on Broadway on Friday night. But the cashier threw in a helping of racism for free.

When Cho, who’s Korean American, checked her receipt, she noticed that the cashier had typed in “lady chinky eyes” as her name, the Wrap reported.

"Hey @PapaJohns just FYI my name isn't 'lady chinky eyes,' " Cho, a communications manager at nonprofit investigative journalism group ProPublica, complained on Twitter on Saturday, also posting a photo of the receipt, the Wrap reported. Within four hours, more than 100,000 people had viewed her post, the New York Post reported.

Papa John’s immediately fired the cashier and apologized on Twitter and Facebook, CNN reported. "We were extremely concerned to learn of the receipt issued in New York," the company said in a statement on Facebook, according to CNN. "This act goes against our company values, and we've confirmed with the franchisee that this matter was addressed immediately and that the employee is being terminated. We are truly sorry for this customer's experience."

However, a manager at the Broadway location who would identify himself only as Jerome told the New York Post that the cashier, a teenager, didn’t intend to offend. “It’s a busy place, and it was a way to identify her and her order,” he said. “You know, we do stuff like that sometimes. We’ll write ‘the lady with the blue eyes’ or ‘the guy in the green shirt.’ ”
