Weavers of the Western Isles

The Geo Quiz takes us to the north Atlantic. The chain of islands we want you to name, lies off the west coast of Scotland, so they are sometimes called the Western Isles.

The best way to travel to these remote islands is to take a ferry across the Minch. Hand-weaving is a centuries old island tradition here

In fact this is the only place in the world where genuine “Harris Tweed” is made -it’s dyed, spun, hand-woven and quality checked on these islands.

They’re called the Outer Hebrides.

If the label in your scarf or sweater says pure wool Harris Tweed, then the cloth has been hand-woven on these islands.

Reporter Dany Mitzman paid a visit. She met two weavers from different generations, but who share a passion for the islands, the traditions, and the cloth itself.
